Fussy Eating

It can be normal for children to go through phases of refusing certain foods or foods they had previously eaten. This can be a way for children to show independence or look for attention. They can also be wary of new foods, and it can take some time for them to accept new foods. This can vary between individuals.

If the problem is ongoing or you have concerns about your child’s weight or nutritional status contact your GP or seek the support of a Dietitian.

Strategies that can help

·       Stick to structured meal and snack times as opposed to grazing throughout the day. Aim for 3 meals and 2-3 balanced snacks as a guide. Avoid giving snacks too close to mealtimes to stimulate appetite

·       Aim to eat together as a family where possible as they will learn from you and may be more encouraged to try new foods when eating with others

·       Try to create a calm, relaxing environment at mealtimes without distraction such as television or toys

·       Try to present foods in a fun way to make them more appealing or try using bright coloured cutlery

·       Continue to offer new foods as it can take a child up to 16 times before they accept a new food. Aim to offer a new food alongside a familiar food. Be sure to eat the new food yourself as they are more likely to try it if they see you eating it

·       Try to avoid putting pressure on them to try a new food. The aim is to create a positive association with mealtimes. Start with small amounts. Even if they only touch or smell the new food this has increased their exposure to the new food and is some progress in itself

·       If your child refuses a meal avoid offering a completely different meal as this is a habit they may quickly learn. Leave the meal aside without comment and offer the same meal later. Do not worry if they do not eat the meal, you may find they better at the next meal or the following day

·       Avoid offering too many choices at mealtimes. As a guide maybe offer two choices as opposed to asking ‘what would you like for lunch’
